- On many rigs, the belts bend forward and backward several times
- throughout their travel in the engine. This is not a design flaw.
- The advantage of bending the belt backwards is that more contact per
- pulley can be obtained which requires less belt tension, thus your
- accessory bearings will last longer (less load). Most service places
- will recommend replacing the belts when they see the small cracks on
- the ribs, but in many cases, it is unnecessary. The shops are just
- giving you that advice to 1) sell more parts/service and 2) make sure
- that you don't have a failure that YOU will be mad at THEM about. As
- I stated in a previous posting. Check the service manual for YOUR CAR
- and see what those design engineers recommend.
