- Well, Vince, I doubt that you'd find many people agreeing that all
- amps sound the same. Perhaps all the amps that your friend has listened to
- sound about the same, but it would be mistake to extrapolate that opinion
- to amps in general.
-
- Is the center speaker going to be used in some sort of surround
- setup? In that case, you might also have outputs for a subwoofer or a
- surround channel in addition to the center speaker. You might profit the
- most in the long run from buying a stereo amplifier. Use one channel for
- the center speaker and the other for another surround or subwoofer output.
-
- In any case, you may find it difficult to find a good, inexpensive
- mono amp. (Perhaps somebody else may know of one and will comment.) There
- are several models of decent stereo amps for under $400-$500 dollars that
- should perform quite nicely, and will may sound better than your receiver!
-
- In fact, your money may be better invested in improving your
- simple stereo reproduction before adding additional channels. It is an
- idea worth considering.
-
- You will want an amp with adjustable gain controls, so that you
- can match levels with the left and right channels. For this reason, I
- would suggest the Parasound HCA-800, a 100wpc amp with adjustable gain
- controls that lists for $425.
-
- Good luck,
-
