- Can you tell me what constitutes "American culture"? The U.S. is a pluralistic
- society (i.e., the American "melting pot") which has derived much, but
- synthesized little. Jazz is truly American, and the "cowboy," but this
- statement sounds too much like advocacy of "white man's cultural perspective."

- |that, far more generalized, background would not point out the differences

-
- Wow, that sounds like multiculturalism, despite the lie that we have a single
- culture in this country. We are not a monoculture, like the Japanese. In fact,
- the history of American culture has been one of assimulation of diverse
- ethnicities. And just like genetic variability within an enclave, our cultural
- diversity in the past has proven to be a strength, not a weakness.
-
- |and that would in the end make the subjects of such education feel much more
- |equal - they'd be americans, not jewish-americans, not african-americans, not
- |whatever.
-
- What (or rather, which) monocultural perspective would you teach in the
- schools? The conventional, white male, western civ perspective? Perhaps you'd
- teach it strickly from an African point of view, or an Oriental one? Each of
- these offer a unique perspective on American history and culture, and the
- merging of them in a teaching environment is what multiculturalism is all about.
