- University study in a field applicable to a profession (ie. Computer
- Science) is valuable for the fundamentals and theory. I have seen far
- too often where people have "worked" in programming positions but do
- not understand the fundamentals (simple things like the classic data
- structures). This is generally due to the fact that they in fact, did
- not graduate with a CS or related degree. Some people do well after a
- year or two simply because of their natural intelligence and they
- overcome their ignorance in this field.
-
- On the other hand, a CS degree teaches nothing about programming in
- the real world where other factors come into play. The co-op program
- is good for balancing the theory with practical knowledge. If, like
- myself, you went to a university which did not have a co-op program,
- you should have taken part-time jobs in this field. If you did not,
- then you should remember that you alone are responsible for your
- education/career. PLAN PLAN PLAN!
-
- The only option available to people with only a degree and no
- experience is to try to get into a large company that have campus
- recruitment(?). When a company hires a new graduate, they are taking
- on a burden and a risk. You have only your intelligence and a degree
- to offer. They are risking their time and money on the hope that you
- can actually perform in a real-world working environment.
- Unfortunately, because of our economic conditions, there are few
- companies that are willing to front the cost. The competition for the
- few positions will be based on high marks and/or experience. If you
- have neither, then you are SOL.
-
- For the students out there who think that once they have a degree,
- some company out there in the real world is OBLIGATED to give you a
- job, then slap yourself in the face a couple of times. Stop whining
- and get on with your life/career!
-
- Carpe Daem(?) Carpo Duanam(?) Carpet Dumbo(?) Anyway, its a line off
- a movie ;-) (Yes, I don't have a Dead Language Degree, I don't have a
- Film Studies Degree, I do have a CS degree and I'm extremely lucky to
- have a job in a field which I truly enjoy)
