-
- I think that people without experience have to realize that it's a
- buyer's market out there right now. Simply put, why should *I* hire a
- greenhorn when there's ten people with experience out there willing to
- take the job?
-
- Honestly, I think University breeds misconceptions. First of all,
- a University does not train you for a job --- that is not it's
- purpose. It simply provides you with a hunger for knowledge. Some
- Universities have a `co-op' program. In lieu of a co-op program, I
- would recomend an additional college degree.
-
- Why? How usefull is the average University Graduate in the first
- four months? ... The first year? From all accounts, they can even be
- a hinderance. Graduating with co-op experience gives you the "2-5"
- years experience. Graduating with a BA or a BSc doesn't.
-
- I'm not trying to say that the University degree is not usefull...
- it's just that graduates often have to be "de-programmed" before
- they're useful. Look at my institution, for instance:
-
- We teach one course in `C', and one course in COBOL. In neither
- is the language actually taught... students should emphirically `know'
- them. We often use DOS, we occaisonally use UN*X ... but they're not
- `taught' --- just used. No OS/2, No Windows, No X-Windows... etc. on
- down the line. People need this to be useful.
-
- The courses themselves are very useful, but I wouldn't want to be
- looking for a job without that co-op certification on my degree.
