- "ORIENTATION EFFECTS IN VISUAL OBJECT PERCEPTION:
- SPINNING A NEW YARN USING OLD AND NEW FEATURES."

-
- Abstract:
- The time needed to identify objects from two-dimensional depictions
- can be affected sharply by the orientation of the depicted object.
- The orientation effects have a number of robust characteristics that
- will be described in the talk. In particular I will review studies
- that
-
- * estimated the magnitude of the effect across different stimulus
- materials,
- * compared the effect magnitudes in identification experiments
- with that in mental rotation experiments,
- * explored the shape of the orientation function for pattern recognition,
- * measured effects of learning and transfer of learning,
- * estimated the orientation of the perceptual frame of reference
- used to perform various tasks.
-
- Recent results from a naming task and a top-bottom discrimination
- task based on a large sample of subjects will be summarized
- and used to evaluate various claims in extant theories of object
- perception.
