-
- You're free to post to most groups. As soon as you post an article
- anyone at your local site can read it, and it's sent to the outside
- world as soon as your site normally gets around to sending out news.
-
- Moderated groups are different. Every article needs to be approved by
- a moderator before it gets posted. Your news reader software knows
- what groups are moderated. If you try to post to a moderated group the
- newsreader will instead mail the article to the moderator for
- approval. If the moderator approves, he'll post it himself for the
- world to see.
-
- Groups are moderated for various reasons. The most common reason is to
- keep postings to the group relevant. The moderator is supposed to weed
- out any posts which don't really pertain to the subject at hand. In
- reality most articles are accepted by the moderators, because just the
- thought of someone giving their stamp of approval is enough to keep
- most posters on track.
