- : First problem: the name. comp.os.nt is short and to the point,
- : but maybe too short. comp.os.windows-nt is too long, comp.os.windowsnt
- : is too mushed, comp.os.ms-windows.nt IS NOT the correct location.
- : Windows NT is not a subsystem of Microsoft Windows, it is separate
- : and non equal to Microsoft Windows. This is a RFD for a reason,
- : I'm way open to suggestions for a new name. If someone can convince
- : me that comp.os.ms-windows.nt is appropriate, great.
-
- I believe that in the documentation to the Win32 SDK under using the name
- Microsoft Windows NT, it says not to refer to Windows NT as 'NT'. I'd
- propose one of two names:
-
- comp.os.winnt
- comp.os.ms-windows.nt
-
- While it is very true that Windows NT is very different than Windows 3.1
- in internal structure, Microsoft is positionning Windows NT as a followon
- to the Dos/Windows combination. To many, the major structural differences
- will not be that apparent. As well, the similarities between Windows 3.1
- and Windows NT (similar API, compatible software, same user interface)
- do make it a distinct member of the ms-windows family.
-
- While many may feel that putting Windows NT in the same group as Windows 3.1
- is doing it a great disservice, I don't think that that is Microsoft's
- intent at all.
-
- : Third problem: comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.win32. Here is a
- : group that already is discussing some topics relating to Windows. I
- : obviously do not think this is sufficient.
-
- If you follow the above train of thought and decide upon c.o.ms-w.nt, then
- you'll probably also agree that this group makes sence too. In addition,
- the Win32S libraries will make Win32 available to the whole MS-Windows
- family, not just WinNT.
-
- Already, there's plenty of discussion of Windows networking to warrant the
- consideration of another group. For now, a lot of MS-Windows specific talk
- is taking place on comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc.
