- 1. The Stage Deli of New York has an instantiation at the Tremont House
- in the theatre district, another satellite over on Boylston, and yet
- another place in Coolidge Corner in Brookline. The Stage is an excellent
- facsimile of a standard New York deli. (Their "real one" is up the street
- from my personal favorite in Manhattan, so I haven't tried it.)
- The quality seems to be highest at the one on Tremont, which was the
- first one they opened here.
-
- I took some friends there last night, and we had the following observations.
- My reuben cost about $8 and was very large (but not as large as I would get
- at the Carnegie); the corned beef ("we truck it in from NY") was better
- than other places in Boston; the potatoe knishes were weird and not heavy
- but were good anyway; the fish-stuff (that I never eat, what do you call
- it?) was of the "sweet" variety, and the chopped chicken liver was great.
- You can get pretty good chicken soup with matzoh and/or kreplach.
- There are all manner of platters, sandwiches, goodies, and deserts.
- The egg creams are good. Overall, an excellent place, and I love it.
-
- 2. The Deli Haus in Kenmore Square is always pretty good, but they won't
- seat a party of one at a table (space is limited). They are open late.
- Things I get here regularly include knishes, the *huge* sandwiches,
- and breakfast eggs and stuff.
-
- 3. The S&S in Innman Square is yummy, but I don't usually get what
- I think of as "deli" food there; I get the inexpensive dinner specials
- or sandwiches like the roast beef au jus. They have knishes, and deserts.
- They have a good menu brunch on Sundays, but there's a long line.
-
- 4. There are any number of kosher meat places in Coolidge Corner.
- Although they are well-known, my own experience is too limited for
- me to reccomend one over the other. You can get bagels around there, too.
