- Dearly beloved noshers of all creeds and colors:
- In the words of the immortal Dante, forget it.
-
- Boston is a perfectly nice place, a lot more pleasant
- than it was when I lived there in 1946, but in one
- respect it's unchanged: Jewish baked goods and deli
- ought not be discussed in front of children.
-
- As the one who hopefully asked for bagel recommendations,
- I tell you sadly that there are no bagels in Boston, only
- crusty kleenex. You want pumpernickel? You have to ask
- for "dark rye" and what you get isn't worth asking for.
- Years ago I wandered into a Brookline grocery and heard
- a young woman ask (I swear this is true) for "sliced
- tchayle". And last week at Boston Daily Bread I was
- given a taste of..wholewheat challa.
-
- I ask you.
-
- Ditto "delicatessens". The Stage, for god's sake, doesn't even
- offer barley soup. And Rubin's kishke? Don't ask.
-
- What's worse is that if somebody with a rich poppa tried
- b'shem shomayim (in the name of Heaven) to open a real
- establishment, s/he'd go broke. Boston!
-
- What to do? My solution is: care packages from Zabar's (bread,
- coffee, etc.) and Murray's (for fish). And of course H&H
- (1-800-NY BAGELS) for the real stuff.
-
- So what's good in Laotian cooking?
