- First as a parent, then as a single-parent, and finally
- as a family living at the poverty level 3-1/2 years
- ago, I am appalled! On my $15K a year salary, I was still
- willing to pay top-dollar for daycare (this meant approximately
- 30% of my salary or $4400 a year) because it was critical
- that I find good daycare for my child. As a single-parent,
- not working was obviously not an option and knowing that I
- did have to work, I wanted to know that my daughter was safe
- and secure so that I could be productive at my job.
-
- Thank goodness our circumstances have changed substantially
- in the last three years (my daughter and I are now firmly
- entrenched in the middle class and I finally do not have to
- despair over money now) and I am still happy to pay for the
- excellent care that she receives. I now make several yearly
- private donations to her center as a small token of my
- appreciation for the incredible job and service my center
- is giving us. But I think it is a sad fact that daycare
- workers are not compensated enough or respected enough for
- the incredible job that they are doing (hence, the high
- turnover rate and job burnout among daycare workers).
-
- I wonder where Zoe Baird's ethics and priorities are! I'm at least
- relieved that she had the decency to withdraw. I think her
- actions are reprehensible and on a DECENT wage, she could
- have found some top-notch caregivers for her children who
- weren't illegal aliens!
