- My child has had some gross motor delays, but oddly enough he began to
- skip spontaneously a few months ago. He was about 4 yrs three months
- when he did this. He now skips all the time, and he has added galloping
- to his repertoire. I was convinced that his occupational therapist must
- have taught him this, but she did not. And his IEP (individualized
- education plan) had skipping down as a gross motor skill to be worked on
- in the fourth quarter of the school year. Since he is in a 12 month
- program, this would be in the summer (when he turns five.) So I guess
- the answer is that some kids just figure out how to skip on their own,
- but it for those who don't, it's a skill that can be taught around 4 1/2
- or 5.
-
- I can't believe that skipping is a prerequisite for kindergarten, though.
- I'm sure they are just looking for indications of gross motor ability,
- and that's a common skill that preschoolers do figure out.
