- This is the clarification I need - and although there may be a newsgroup
- just about AIDS issues, I wanted the information to be understood among
- parents.
- I don't think that if EVERYONE used latex condoms every time, there
- would be no AIDS epidemic, period.
- My understanding is that _a condom is permeable_ - even by the AIDS
- virus. With a certain spermicide, perhaps the risk is 'less' but certainly
- not nonexistent.
- Every once in awhile, I see this information published, as in my local
- newpaper recently - a letter to the editor.
- This morning, I heard the Chancellor of the New York Public School System,
- a Mr. Fernandez (who is promoting his new book) talk on the radio about the
- problems his school system is trying to deal with. The schools have health
- resource rooms staffed by volunteers who are trained by the American Medical
- Society. The information they impart is that 'Abstinence is the only safe
- sex' and if you HAVE to have sex, use a condom for LESS risk. There had to
- be a lot of legal consultation before the AIDS curriculum was in place because
- they had to be sure that the school system would not be sued when a teen gets
- AIDS after having sex with a condom. They had to be very very sure that the
- teens understand that they are assuming risk.
- Since AIDS can take as long as a decade to show symptoms in an individual,
- the disease is a more serious threat than many teens recognize. Or their
- parents!
