- A nurse who worked in the maternity ward told me it was standard
- procedure to give newborns a bottle of water "to insure all passages are
- all open and working". She also said it was not a good reason, since
- breastfeeding would accomplish the same goal, and colostrum isn't any
- worse than water. (She was on a committee to increase the rate of
- breastfeeding among the moms delivering at the hospital.)
-
- She also told me that even though I had requested no bottles, Marie
- probably (almost definitely) got one. This made sense in hindsight to
- me since the nurse who brought Marie to me initially told me she had a
- good suck (how would she know if she hadn't given her a bottle?), yet
- Marie had trouble nursing at first.
-
- I may be paranoid, but I would suggest keeping someone you trust with
- the baby at all times.
