- I'd just like to make a comment that even tho I support people who
- work part time, in some cases it can cause difficulties for a team in assigning
- work loads. We have a person working half time, no kids just doesn't need
- the money (boy I wish I could do that!). We're a small team, 4 people, and
- this person has been working part time since before the person was on the
- project. In assigning tasks, it is difficult to put this person on something
- critical or that needs a lot of customer interaction because they aren't here
- all the time. Anything that involves contacting someone on the west coast is
- almost impossible since the person works M,T,W mornings and all day Thursday.
- So, a lot of the time the person doesn't get the more time consuming or
- critical
- pieces. It can also cause lost time when trying to figure out a bug if it
- happens in the afternoon. Usually, we'll try to figure it out ourselves which
- might not be as efficient. This person has also said that things such as
- meetings and other company paperwork causes problems. If you are only here 4
- hours a day and a staff meeting takes two hours, you've lost half of your time
- versus 1/4 for an 8 hour person. (My solution to this is not to go unless you
- think they are worthwhile which most aren't.) This person has said that you
- really have to cut out the extras (such as reading this news group) or you
- don't get anything done.
- On this persons behalf, I'll say that the person really does manage
- to get a lot done. The management tends to ignore the person, i.e. hasn't had
- a review in years. (A lot of full time people are in the same boat.)
- But the person is afraid to gripe because management could push the
- person to come back full time. In fact, the person is afraid to gripe about
- a lot of things that the person gets short changed on because of that. I
- don't have any problems working with this person except for occasionally having
- to put something aside until the next morning. But the part-time status was
- known from the beginning and we plan our assignments with that in mind.
- So, I'd be careful when going someplace part time or cutting back to
- part time that you aren't going to feel like this. It's got to be tough to
- feel like the management isn't really supporting you. You'd also need to
- accept the fact that there are some parts of a project that might be difficult
- to assign you do to due to the fact that you can't get it done as quickly or
- it needs you there when you aren't scheduled to be in the office. I'd
- also try to be flexible if possible in trading days/time off for a customer
- meeting or special situation.
