- When we thought that we might be buying a new car my wife was heavily into
- the concept of HIGH, HIGH, HIGH gas mileage. Our current car is a Chevy
- Spectrum that seats four and gets relatively high mileage. The problem is
- that we were looking into cars that would comfortably seat five people and
- some of the stuff we schlep back and forth between here and Jersey. As the
- number of passengers went up, the mileage went down, and this drove Cheryl
- nuts.
-
- Finally I did a little math for her (based on an Amtrak ad I'd seen years
- ago) and figured out what the *passenger* miles per gallon were. It worked
- out that while it was true that a five or seven seater had a lower *raw*
- mpg, if you factored in how many passengers you could carry (and the
- likelihood of you carrying that many passengers), the larger car with
- actually had a *higher* *passenger* mpg. I mean, if I need *two* 50 mpg
- cars to carry the same number of people I could take in one 40 mpg car (or
- have to make two trips in the smaller one), the 40 mpg one looks a whole lot
- better.
-
- Remember, raw mpg isn't always the whole story.
