- I can't answer your questions about the dependent care account -
- it isn't an option here.
-
- Having done the rough calculations for the child care form (2441?)
- associated with the 1040 (different child care form if you file
- another main form), I can give you these points of information.
-
- - The form does take dependent care accounts into effect.
-
- - If you pay more than $2,400/yr for one child's daycare, the government
- doesn't take that into account. (Paying $5,000/yr is equivalent to
- paying $2,400.)
-
- - The amount that you can actually take as a tax credit is some small
- fraction of the amount that you actually pay. Your income level determines
- the fraction, in part.
-
- - Most of the finagling comes from the fact that dependent care accounts
- effectively give you a deduction (lowers income before taxes like
- mortgage interest) and paying for it out of pocket gives you a tax credit
- (lowers final tax bill).
-
- You should get ahold of the correct tax form and instruction booklet. (I've
- found the IRS to be really happy to send you the correct forms, though they
- can be a bit slow.) Work out the details now to give you the best tax
- advantage for the year.
-
- I know that for a full year of child care for us, we will be able to take
- something on the order of $350 off our final tax bill. Yes, peanuts. :(
-
- good luck!
