- Let me put in a plug for my kind of contraceptive: a cervical cap.
- They do have to be refitted after a baby comes, but they are better
- than a diaphragm in other ways. I got bladder infections with a
- diaphragm, but never did with a cap. I had no trouble putting it in
- or taking it out (less trouble really than I had with a diaphragm),
- but some people find it awkward at first. The best part: you can put
- it in and leave it in for 48 hours without adding any more goop (great
- for hot weekends). They are pretty small and not too intrusive (my
- husband and I affectionately call it "the bozo nose" or just "the
- nose"). They only require a tiny bit of contraceptive jelly, so a
- tube lasts a long time. They also worked very well for me: No babies
- for years and years, and then when we decided to have a child, I got
- pregnant very quickly (three times, no less).
-
- Cervical caps don't work for everyone, and it is crucial to get a
- really good fitting (and good practitioners are not real common), but
- if you get a good fit, they are great. I don't have access to the
- woman who fit my original cap, so I am really crossing my fingers that
- my current doctor can set me up with a good cap next week at my
- postpartum appointment.

- Just a word of warning, according to by ob/gyn, this is not the best choice
- if you have ever had a "bad" pap smear. Apparently, because the cap hugs
- the cervix so tightly, the chance of cervical problems increases greatly.
- (at least this was my understanding). I have only once had a bad pap test,
- but I then had to have a colposcopy to make sure it wasn't anything too
- awful. All was fine, but my ob/gyn said not to use my cap anymore. Bummer!
- Good thing we wanted to start trying to have another baby anyway...brag time,
- it took us no time at all (< month). It sure is fun trying though.
-
- Anyone considering the cap should at least ask about the possible cervical
- problems...just my $.02.
