- This question, and Keith Garrard's "response", pushed the button
- on one of my pet peeves. So here goes.
-
- The problem is that employers in our society have managed to
- convert most of the population to believe that the proper
- priority is
-
- 1. Job
- 2. Family
-
- This is ridiculous.
-
- There is no reason for a professional of either gender to be
- expected to be on call 24-hours for their job (with only a
- FEW life-critical exceptions). There is no justification for
- a software engineer to be expected to work overtime routinely.
- If the current staff cannot meet deadlines, that is because in
- most cases the employer hasn't hired enough staff. Employers in
- this industry are getting away with running shameless job-shop
- conditions because it has become accepted practice for programmers
- to put in 60 hour weeks. The employer benefits, and questions
- such as "How can I have a family with this type of schedule?"
- arise. It shouldn't have to be a choice!
-
- You may have decided that part-time was your only choice because
- then you won't have to work over 40 hours a week. Or maybe you
- really do want less than full time. If employers didn't have so
- many full-time employees bamboozled into thinking it is normal
- to work overtime, they'd *need* part-time workers to fill out
- their staffs.
-
- It is not hard to have a 40-hour a week job and a family when
- there is access to good daycare. It is impossible to have both
- even with great daycare if the schedule is erratic and overlong.
- Poor company management should not prevent employees from having
- normal lives (and this goes for non-parents, too).
