- About four or five years ago I was editor and literary agent for a book
- sold to Harmony Books, now a division of Random House. The agent
- negotiates the deal with the publisher. Everything depends on prospects
- for the book. Somebody with a big name or with a lurid background can
- get a big price. Mine (ours) was one of many on Walt Disney. We got
- 10% of the gross for hard cover; paperbacks bring about 8%. We did not
- put up any money. (That's a gimmick by so-called vanity publishers who
- make their money by poorly printing books by eager authors who can't
- sell to the legitimate publishers.) Writing books is no way
- to get rich unless you're a terrific writer (or have a great book idea)
- and have a good agent. I don't know anything about text books. BTW,
- there are some great books on how to get published.
