  23. To state my point more clearly: Transaction costs are *not* included in the
  24. expenses, and therefore high turnover funds do not have to have higher
  25. expense ratios than low turnover funds. Loads are also not included in
  26. the expense ratio, since they are only paid once. Expense ratios only
  27. include management fees, 12b-1 (marketing) fees, and administrative
  28. expenses.

  30. As Rob points out, expenses do affect the yield of the
  31. fund, since yield is calculated as dividends and interest on portfolio
  32. minus expenses.

  34. To give an example, Fidelity OTC has turnover of > 200%, but expense
  35. ratio is only 1.17%. Fidelity Emerging Growth had turnover 1/92 thru
  36. 9/92 of 558% but expense ratio was only 1.12% (figures from
  37. Morningstar).

  39. The bottom line: Both expenses and turnover are drags on performance,
  40. and their effects must be considered separately.
