Dennis, your thoughts are most interesting.  Something that a few from
residential school in my area have stated is that they leave school with
a chip on their shoulder, which was placed there by the school.  Seems
that they are told they must always be better than the rest and think of
themselves in this manner.  As a result, this attitude is not easily
accepted by those who did not attend that school.  It tends to create a
closed environment which is self protective, but which tends to isolate
the students from life beyond for a large portion of the year.  This
isolation can be true with a deaf residential school as well.  The
educational system is changing, and more are being integrated into the
public school system, but thus far I have heard no mention of any
threats re closure of residential schools.  Mind you, the government has
closed down many health care institutions due to financial cutbacks,
forcing the occupants into the community, so who knows what happens
next.  My wife had to find a new job due to that cutback.  TTYL
