- According to LA Times, the govt is going to have new labelling
- guidelines which will be compulsory for ALL processed foods. The
- companies will have to comply by May 1994. The new labels will be
- different in the following ways
-
- 1. The percentage of calories from fat will be explicitly listed on
- the product.
-
- 2. For every nutrient a new metric "Nutrition value"(I am not sure about
- the name)" has been specified. This is the percentage of the nutrient
- that you are getting from this meal as compared to the daily
- requirement (as determined by FDA). E.g. if you are allowed 2400 mg of
- sodium and this dish has 240 mg, then the NV will be 10%.
-
- 3. The serving size will correspond to an actual serving. E.g. for
- cookies a serving size will have to be 30g.
-
- 4. For some nutrients like Riboflavin or niacin or zinc. The
- manufacturer will be asked not to supply the information (to avoid
- confusion, they say!). I think this one sucks...

- PS: The above is posted from memory and I do not make any claims about
- its correctness.
