- While I support the rights of the individual, and I agree that any adult who
- is clearly aware of risk has the right to choose to do risky things, I have
- two problems with the behaviour of the young man in question.
- First, what he is doing is not merely risky, but proven to be harmful. It is
- not a question of IF he will be harmed, but HOW MUCH.
- Second, I find it worrisome that in pursuit of a certain fashionable look, a
- certain physical "ideal" (emphasize the quotes!), someone would engage in
- destructive behaviour. We are all familiar with the emotional demons which
- drive young women with eating disorders, and the tragedy of their plight. It
- is easy to see their behaviour as sick, because they LOOK sick....perhaps
- this man's drive to be "perfect" is easier to sanction because the outward
- result seems so healthy.
- I find the whole thing deeply troubling!
