  16. I bought "LANDSCAPE" from Egghead Software for ~$50.  Before that, I
  17. tried a $10 landscaping software and regretted it.  I ran the LANDSCAPE
  18. program on my 386.  The program was more than adequate for my needs,
  19. and made me think about becoming a landscape architect ;-).  The only
  20. major drag occured whenever it had to "redraw" the screen; it took a
  21. long time if there was any kind of patterns on the screen (lawn,
  22. bricks, trees, etc.).  And the program redraws the screen much more
  23. often than the user would expect it would.  It is great that you can
  24. zoom in to certain areas, but when you do, the program calculates the
  25. "redraw" even though most of it is not on the screen.  My advice:  Wait
  26. to put the "plants" and "patterns (bricks, etc.) until you have
  27. everything else done.  Or have a big pot of coffee on so that you can
  28. go get some while the program "redraws".

  30. It is nicer than using a pencil because it is easy to erase one object
  31. without erasing everything else in the area.  Also, when you are adding
  32. lines or objects, the program will "snap" the origin of the object to
  33. existing corners (or whatever) for you.  Or you can easily instruct the
  34. program to insert this object four feet to the left, and two feet above
  35. the corner of my house.

  37. It will measure areas for you.

  39. It also has a feature  which will assit you with drawing the side view
  40. after you draw the plan view.  I never got around to trying this
  41. feature.

  45. I recommend going through the tutorial in the book, it will save you a
  46. lot of time.  There was no on-line tutorial.

  48. It took me quite a while to do my house and yard (the first time).
  49. But, not any longer than (for me) to do it with an architect rule and
  50. pencil.  And now that I have a template saved on disk, I can modify the
  51. whole thing, and save it in a different file.  For example, I have one
  52. "template" file, another "undergound conduit" file, a "sprinkler" file,
  53. and so on.  I can superimpose any combination of these files on top of
  54. each other as needed.

  56. I recommend the program, hope they come out with a newer version which
  57. is smarter about redrawing the screen.
