  18. Depends on the wood species. Assuming 2x10 joists and 16" spacing, you
  19. can go a tad over 4' with a species like yellow pine or larch, about
  20. 3.5' with Hemlock or southern fir, and a tad over 3' with Western pines,
  21. cedar or spruce.

  23. Put from the other direction, for a 3' overhang, you'll need 2x8 Southern
  24. Pine, or 2x10 just about anything else.

  26. Those figures will give you acceptable results for a 40 pound per square
  27. foot live load plus 10 pound per square foot dead load. Check the framing
  28. codes; the dead loads are directly dependent on the construction of the
  29. rest of the house.

  31. I would recommend that you check out the joists that are constructed from
  32. plywood with 2x4 edges. Plywood has tremendous resistance to lateral 
  33. pressure and might do a better job in this application.
