-
- Depends on the wood species. Assuming 2x10 joists and 16" spacing, you
- can go a tad over 4' with a species like yellow pine or larch, about
- 3.5' with Hemlock or southern fir, and a tad over 3' with Western pines,
- cedar or spruce.
-
- Put from the other direction, for a 3' overhang, you'll need 2x8 Southern
- Pine, or 2x10 just about anything else.
-
- Those figures will give you acceptable results for a 40 pound per square
- foot live load plus 10 pound per square foot dead load. Check the framing
- codes; the dead loads are directly dependent on the construction of the
- rest of the house.
-
- I would recommend that you check out the joists that are constructed from
- plywood with 2x4 edges. Plywood has tremendous resistance to lateral
- pressure and might do a better job in this application.
