- Yesterday's news, both national and local (St. Louis) was filled with
- discussions of the massive changes at Sears -- 50K jobs cut, over a hundred
- stores closed (including the one I shop at :-(), and the catalog
- business either eliminated or changed. That latter is what I am
- asking about. I saw and heard conflicting reportage on this.
-
- Some said that the catalog business is just plain gone entirely.
- Others said the "big book" would be eliminated, but that specialty
- catalogs for specific lines of merchandise would remain. Yet they
- reported the big distribution cener (in Texas, I think) would close.
- So from where would the special lines be serviced?
-
- Can anyone post authoritative and specific information about this?
- Will specialty catalogs and a catalog-order business of reduced size
- remain? Or are those lines being sold off to some other parties?
- Or will all the Sears catalog sales business disappear entirely?
- (If so, there is a void left there that I would think some other firms could
- jump into.)
-
- What will happen to Craftsman tools? I find their "lifetime" warranty to be
- a joke if the store you need to go to to exchange the broken tool
- turns out to be gone! Anybody hear anything about such marketing ploys
- as the Sears Craftsman Club? Will it continue or be elinminated?
-
- If Sears gets out of the large-size catalog-order clothes business, does
- anyone out there have pointers to other reasonably-priced firms to
- take over that role? King-Size is far too expensive. I haven't heard
- from Haband's large-size subsection in recent months.
