Tried any of those cloze stories that require a particular part of speech? Kids actually like them so much that they'll come to ask what an adverb is an how it's used. (One of many examples)
At a few teachers' conferences I've been to here (NSW, Australia), I've found others that believe them to be an excellent supplementary tool.
