- I really enjoyed reading your suggestions. I have been using
- folders for several years. I thought having 110 was a lot.
- One idea I would like to share -- I changed the folders my
- students use everyday, we call them work folders. These
- folders are used just as you have suggested. I try to give
- feed back and keep a personal touch. What I have changed is
- that I supplied the students with another folder and we call
- them assessment folders. These assessment folders become their
- portfolios. About three to four weeks into a grading period,
- we take time in class to evaluate the work the work folder
- contains. The students choose three or more items they think
- show how they have improved, or maybe how they were confused
- one lesson and improved the next time. These papers they put
- an "F" on for FAVORITE. I inturn tell them to mark two to four papers
- I want them to place in their assessment folder. Often the
- papers I want are also the Favorite papers. They place a "T"
- on them for teacher. The students then write a cover letter
- explaining their growth in class since the last assessment, or
- where they may had trouble. They tell me all sorts of things;
- things I enjoy reading and sometimes things I need to read. I
- use these "portfolios" to help me see how my students have
- grown. I am hoping to eventually encourage all the teachers in
- my department to do the same so that the portfolio could travel
- with the student. It really gives you insight into the thinking
- processes of the student.

- I love the use of using the folders as attendance. For some
- odd reason I never did use them as a means of taking roll. Oh,
- I do put make-up work in them, but I never made the connection
- to use them to check on students who were absent. Mainly,
- because of the way I grade homework. It's all on effort. I
- teach Math and I don't see how a student is suppose to learn in
- one night what has taken most of man kind centuries to
- understand. Therefore, I grade on whether they attempted the
- problems or not. Not whether they are right or wrong. I
- always hated that in school.

- have. We all could use ideas ....to help us help our students
- realize ALL of them CAN LEARN!!!!!!!! If we only would give them
- a chance and they would believe in themselves.
