It's a popular area of teachers' professional development now, Lisa, especially in `difficult' school communities.
There are oodles of books and resources available. do a subject scan at your local library. {Do you have teachers' resource centres in the states? We have here in Australia.}
One of the best Assertive Discipline models that I'm aware of is run by Chatswood High School here in New South Wales. Want to write and ask for their handout? [I'll hunt their street address if you so desire.]
Many such programs appear under the acronyms SNACS and SCANS - Student Notification and Commendation Scheme (or Student Commendation and Notification Scheme).
