Does anyone have any experience in different methods of
teaching small children how to read? What do you think
about Whole Language vs. Phonics for a 5 year old who has
just started to learn? If he is being taught at school
with W.L. approach, and at home with Phonics, would it be
confusing, or they enhance each other?

I thonk you need some of both. Ideally, whole language will include some phonics work too, but I think kids need the phonics skills as well as the natural approach to reading that Whole Language brings. Low stress and an enjoyable experience are also key factors to a lifetime of enjoying reading. These should be a result of a good whole language approach. Hope this helps!
