- gzip version 0.8.1 is available for anonymous ftp from prep.ai.mit.edu
- [18.71.0.38], in the file /pub/gnu/gzip-0.8.1.tar.Z
-
- gzip (GNU zip) is a compression utility designed to be a replacement
- for 'compress'. Its main advantages over compress are better
- compression and freedom from patented algorithms. The GNU Project
- will soon make this the standard compression program for its system.
- So please try to build it *now*, before conversion of all GNU .Z files
- to the gzip format. The Linux project has already adopted gzip for
- distribution of Linux itself (see comp.os.linux).
-
- gzip currently uses the compression algorithm used in zip 1.9 (the
- portable pkzip compatible archiver). The gzip format was however
- designed to accommodate several compression algorithms. gunzip can
- currently decompress files created by gzip, zip, compress or pack. The
- detection of the input format is automatic.
-
- A script 'znew' is provided for automatic conversion of .Z files to
- the gzip format. A gzip'ed tar file is usually about 2/3 the size of a
- tar.Z file.
-
- Notable changes from version 0.5 are (see the NEWS file in the
- distribution for a complete list):
-
- o gzip can now extract .z files created by 'pack'.
-
- o it is now possible to append to a gzip'ed file.
-
- o 'configure' should now work on most systems
-
- o many minor bug fixes
