  32. 1. "AN OVERVIEW OF PEX (Mike French)

  35. PEX, the 'PHIGS Extension to X' describes how to combine 3D computer
  36. graphics with 2D windowing standards in a heterogeneous network
  37. environment. PEX has been formulated by an industrial consortium and
  38. adopted by most leading computer vendors. At the heart of PEX is a network
  39. protocol specifying how 3D information is transferred between client and
  40. server. The application programmer is presented with a choice of
  41. client-side interfaces, including PHIGS and PHIGS PLUS International
  42. Standards.

  44. This tutorial will concentrate on the needs of the application programmer.
  45. Starting with summaries of X, PHIGS and PHIGS PLUS it will go on to cover:
  46. PEX architectures, X-PHIGS integration, PHIGS input, PEX-Motif integration,
  47. system evaluation, portability and interoperability, PEXlib and immediate
  48. mode interfaces.  Familiarity with fundamental computer graphics concepts
  49. is expected, and some knowledge of X and/or PHIGS would be beneficial.

  51. MIKE FRENCH is a Graphics Application Engineer with Evans & Sutherland. He
  52. has extensive experience with PHIGS and PEX in a wide variety of
  53. application areas.

  60. 2. "BEYOND THE MOTIF BASICS" (John Wexler)

  63. This tutorial builds on an earlier EG UK tutorial (held in October 1992)
  64. covering Motif Basics.  Further widgets, such as Text, will be described.
  65. Container widgets, such as Form, will be detailed, together with their
  66. layout mechanisms.  Mechanisms, such as methods, actions and translations,
  67. will also be included.  A practical to illustrate these concepts will be
  68. run.  Participants should have attended the first tutorial OR have a
  69. knowledge of basic Motif concepts, for example the details of callbacks and
  70. resources, basic widgets, such as MainWindow and ScrolledList and the use
  71. of PulldownMenus.

  73. JOHN WEXLER works at the Edinburgh Regional Computing Centre. His special
  74. interests are operating systems, concurrent systems, and software
  75. engineering.  His is the author of "Concurrent Programming in occam 2".
