- Because other vendors (e.g. Genoa) are also going to such a system
- for setting dot-clocks (as do many (most?) of the S3-based boards),
- XFree86 1.2 will add the capability to call an external program to
- set the dot-clock when video modes are entered. This keeps us from
- having to hack the drivers when new hardware schemes for old chipsets
- are added.
-
- XFree86 1.2 will be released in a couple of weeks (I know, I've been
- saying that for a while. We're still working out a few last bugs in
- the SVR3 shared libaries). You will want this version.

- In the US, the legality of this is questionable (there have been court
- decisions in both directions). I have no idea what, if anything, that
- implies where you are.
-
- That said, I know of at least one person who has done exactly what you
- describe. I will not give out his name, for two reasons: (a) I don't
- want Diamond to get after him, and (b) I want to encourage people to
- return their Diamond boards and buy a board from a friendly vendor,
- such as Orchid.
