- I've just been talking to Tektronix about their new server code for
- their Xterminals which now supports local clients like MWM or OLWM so
- that the network local is reduced on networks of Xtermianls. The
- salesman suggested that all Tek Xterminals really run a cutdown Unix
- like system really with the Xserver as one client which is how it all
- works. Now in our department we run a large number of Sun3s (50s and
- 60s), as Xterminals using Xkernel. I pointed this out to the Tek
- salesman and he seemed quite surprised.
-
- He also told me that Tek would not tell me the way that local clients
- worked at the moment (he didn't know I think), but that the MWM and
- OLWM were the real window managers. It occurs to me that I can do the
- same job on Xkernel by rigging OLWM or TWM or whatever to be started
- on the Xterminal after it has started up, and get it to communicate
- with a stub window manager on the host you would normally run the
- window manager on whenever it needs to read the config file or start
- up a process (low network stuff.) The best way to achieve this would
- probably be a server extention (thanks Tim), so that the stub program
- can instruct the server on the Xterminal to start a local client and
- set up communications with it. I don't mind this beign completely
- incompatible with the system that Tek use since they don't want to
- tell me theirs, (and writing more local clients for their terminals
- could be hard.) Before I go away and look hard at the Xtensions stuff
- has anyone else tried this? Does anyone know good ways to go about
- it? Will it be in X11R6 anyway? (or is it X12R1 next?)
-
- Any information would be welcome.
-
- Please mail me in preference and I'll summarise (to reduce bandwidth
- wasted.)

- To be consistent with DNS domain ordering, shouldn't news groups have
- names like "admin.sun.sys.comp" not "comp.sys.sun.admin" ? EMWTK
