- Big ones! Most particularly I got one of the QX-15's to evaluate. Got
- it out of the box and looked at the back. Guess what? No ethernet ports!
- Sure the ad only talks about it's great remote capabilities with a
- high-speed modem but you just kind of *assume* (my dad warned me about
- doing that :) that Ethernet will be there and hence it's mentioned only
- the fine-print. As in do you want BNC/AUI or 10BASET/AUI, etc....
-
- Plus the fact that the Qume folks I got on the phone didn't know the
- product and had to refer me to an Atlanta dealer. The Atlanta dealer
- didn't know anything about them either, who then referred me to
- a yet smaller company that sells stuff for him. This guy does video
- imaging work on 486 PC's and didn't know squat about Xterminals but
- helped me out by getting me an eval unit.

- NCD seems to have a pretty good 15" mono unit for around $1K. I got their
- newer model 15r (RISC) in on Friday. Didn't have time to set it up so it's
- Monday before I'll get to play with it. Had BNC/AUI ethernet, plus a
- serial and a parallel port. The owners guide talked about X-remote, their
- optimized package for X over serial which they claimed was much faster
- than SLIP (what isn't?). The unit seemed pretty solid, small, and most
- importantly to me *quiet*. We have some Sun 3's people use as Xterminals
- and I can't stand to be in the office with one on all day, too much fan
- noise and monitor hum.
-
- The NCD rep seemed pretty on the ball and knowledgable. Claims the next
- set of EPROMs and s/w will support the Low Bandwidth X (LBX) features intended
- for X11R6 for even better remote performance. He even offered to stop in
- next week and talk to me and make sure I got it working okay and answer
- any questions. I'm giving NCD lots of point for customer relations.
-
- Haven't gotten to Tektronics yet, maybe next week.
