- You (Larry) don't seem to realize that most (nearly all) business users
- don't know the shell from a hole in the ground. The don't want to do 'ls'
- all day or anything else remotely resembling UNIX. You make a step by step
- list for them on how to start and stop the computer and they log directly
- into some accounting application, where they stay till they log out at
- night. Their applications run on dumb terminals or PC's emulating
- terminals, all hooked up with good ol' RS232, which is probably left over
- from their previous computer. For $200 apiece and $10000 to rewire the
- building I guess they could network all their PC's into the system and for
- $1000 or so apiece they could replace their terminals with PC's. Then
- what? They all run tiny term or some other network terminal emulator.
- You want to give X windows to the clerk who still has trouble with order
- entry after six weeks? Add $500 per PC for X software and replace all the
- old 286's while you are at it.
-
- NOT!
-
- If the printer stops printing or terminals stop displaying or lots of funny
- looking messages are zooming by on the console, they call someone. Most
- don't have anyone you could remotly call a DP manager, just someone in
- charge in calling the SUPPORT person for the device or program that isn't
- doing what is expected.
-
- These folks aren't dumb but they have enough to do entering orders, sending
- out invoices and making their widgets.
