  24. It sounds like you have either a poorly misinformed and
  25. maintained TeX system or something very strange is happening.
  26. Standard TeX can handle up to 256 different languages and
  27. eight-bit input. Michael Ferguson has made available some
  28. multilingual patches but they are really only necessary if you
  29. feel that it's absolutely necessary to be able to have eight bit
  30. control sequences. Personally, I think that the loss of an umlaut
  31. in a control sequence name is no bigger sacrifice than \@ne is
  32. for English speakers.
