  12. I am having problems with makeindex. I find that it produces a large
  13. number of warning messages (approx 20% of my \index entries have warnings
  14. about unmatched range opening and closing). Furthermore, it messes up
  15. a lot of the ranges, and seems to interpret |(} as a special in some cases
  16. as I get entries backslashes and braces where there shouldn't be any.
  17. LaTeX chokes on the results with lost of `missing $ inserted' messages.
  18. This occurs with the makeindex that is shipped with the Dell SVR4 TeX
  19. distribution, as well as the version I have under DOS (emTeX). The .idx
  20. file produced by LaTeX is perfect; it is the .ind file produces by makeindex
  21. that is full of rubbish.

  23. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and is there an easy solution
  24. other than going in by hand each time and fixing the .ind file?

  26. BTW, I have checked the ranges in the .idx file very carefully, and there
  27. are *no* unmatched ranges. The problem is definitely with makeindex.
