If I understood your description correctly, this is a long-time bug and
isn't new to Frame 3.0. There's a fairly easy workaround, although it's
a nuissance to always remember to do it. Just add a blank space to the
end of the paragraph, and mark everything _except_ that blank space
when changing the character format. As long as there are two distinct
character formats used in the paragraph, they won't disappear when you
apply formats to it.
