  12. I am the lucky (:-)) owner of a 16-MHz Z-386.  It has an ancient disk
  13. controller which supports two floppy drives and two 40-Meg MFM drives.
  14. Needless to say, I'm VERY short on disk space.  I'd like to put in 
  15. a SCSI board--I was thinking of the Adaptek 1542 in particular--and
  16. connect it to an external SCSI drive.  If you'll excuse my naivete,
  17. I'd like to pose some questions for those with more experience:

  19. 1.  Is this even possible?  The Zenith BIOS only knows about the
  20. MFM controller.  As I understand it, the SCSI controllers have their
  21. own BIOS.  Is there a danger of the two conflicting somehow?
  22.  
  23. 2.  Does the SCSI board need its own IRQ?  Is there a good one to
  24. use?  (Besides the usual stuff, I just have an add-in board that gives
  25. me two additional serial ports--I can reconfigure the board to switch
  26. the IRQ's they use.)
  27.  
  28. 3.  Are there some brands of SCSI disk that would be better for this
  29. use than others?

  31. 4.  If I get the Adaptek board, could I also add an external CD-ROM
  32. drive?  I know SCSI is SUPPOSED to allow you up to 7 devices, but I also
  33. know it often doesn't work that way.

  35. I should add that my primary operating system is Linux, and my reason
  36. for mentioning the Adaptek is that it's on the list of supported boards.
  37. There are a few others, including the Ultrastore 14F (I think).
