- Having upgraded from a 3/50 to a SPARCstation 10, I thought I'd try and
- re-use one of the original shoeboxes with an Emulex MD21 controller
- and a Maxtor 8760E 600 Mb hard drive in it. Until recently it was working just
- dandy...yeah, I know, slow, but dandy nonetheless.
-
- But then some bad sectors appeared, so I (foolishly) thought, I'd try and reformat
- the drive (after backing it up).
-
- Mistake #1.
-
- The SunOS format program accepts the appropriate parameters (either from the
- keyboard or in format.dat), but on starting the format, pauses for about
- 20 seconds and then coughs up an error message to the effect that it cannot
- format sector 0.
-
- The *REAL* problem is that now the disk's label has been clobbered, along with
- the defect list.
-
- Turns out that just about everything that involves writing on the disk doesn't
- seem too happy. The non-destructive refresh test isn't. Non-destructive, that is.
-
- Anyone had any luck with format and the hardware setup described above?
- Please reply via email and I'll summarize (given I get enough replies to summarize :-) )
-
- Thanks in advance,
-
