  11. Having upgraded from a 3/50 to a SPARCstation 10, I thought I'd try and
  12. re-use one of the original shoeboxes with an Emulex MD21 controller
  13. and a Maxtor 8760E 600 Mb hard drive in it. Until recently it was working just
  14. dandy...yeah, I know, slow, but dandy nonetheless.

  16. But then some bad sectors appeared, so I (foolishly) thought, I'd try and reformat
  17. the drive (after backing it up).

  19. Mistake #1.

  21. The SunOS format program accepts the appropriate parameters (either from the
  22. keyboard or in format.dat), but on starting the format, pauses for about
  23. 20 seconds and then coughs up an error message to the effect that it cannot
  24. format sector 0.

  26. The *REAL* problem is that now the disk's label has been clobbered, along with
  27. the defect list.
  28.  
  29. Turns out that just about everything that involves writing on the disk doesn't
  30. seem too happy. The non-destructive refresh test isn't. Non-destructive, that is.

  32. Anyone had any luck with format and the hardware setup described above?
