- hello again,
-
- First I would like to thank everyone who responded to my previous questions.
- I have learned things that shocked and amazed me ;-)
-
- Onto the questions:
-
- 1) I intend to buy a SPARCclassic for personal, (initially) standalone use.
- Assuming I don't have access to a network, what are all the things I need to
- order to get my system up and running?
- So far I believe I need:
-
- * SPARCclassic itself, comes with monitor and (hopefully) keyboard and mouse.
-
- * Solaris 2.1 CD-ROM media ($50)
-
- * boot floppies (??)
-
- * an optional floppy drive ($150, ouch! sounds high)
-
- * a CD-ROM drive (???)
-
- * an AUI adapter cable if I ever want to connect to a thinnet ($75, too much)
-
- * an external SCSI drive for non-OS files :-)
-
- anything else I have missed??
-
- 2) Since I need a CD-ROM drive, can I get a cool NEC or Sony with multispin
- technology (or borrow a generic SCSI one from a friend til I can buy one),
- in order to install the OS, *or* do I have to buy one from Sun (double ouch!
- I have not seen the price, but I bet it's high).
- In other words, does the Classic need to be able to *boot* from the CD-ROM
- drive in order to install the OS from it?
-
- 3) I have seen prices for a VRAM upgrade for the *LX*, but not for the
- Classic. Does this mean the Classic comes with 1Mb VRAM? I *can* get
- 1152x900x8, can't I?
-
- 4) What do I have to do to get OS bug fixes and updates?
-
- 5) Does the one user license mean that nobody can log in through a serial
- port? (or over the network)?
-
- 6) How do the 15" color and 19" grayscale monitors compare? The 15" sounds
- awfully small for even 1024x768 resolution. It would have to be very sharp
- to be useful. What are the specs for the various monitors? i.e. dot pitch,
- actual viewing area, tube manufacturer, etc.
-
- thank you for your time,
-
