- Here at Tufts CS we've been moving from SunOs 4.1.1 to Solaris 2.1 on a new
- Sparc 10 server called Allegro. We recently made an error that caused us
- much pain and suffering so I just thought I'd notify people. In migrating
- our NIS services on our old server to NIS+ on Allegro, I replaced Allegro's
- /etc/services file with the old server's /etc/services file. As a result,
- a daemon responsible for security, lockd, was no longer configured properly
- in /etc/services on Allegro. This, in turn, caused the NFS daemon, nfsd,
- to fail with an extremely cryptic error message everytime we ran it (some
- message saying there was a bad file number). Once we replaced Allegro's
- /etc/services with the original, everything ran smoothly. So, my advice is
- to either use the administrative files that come with the new OS, or if you
- have to keep information from your old system, try to merge it with the 2.1
- /etc files instead of overwriting. Incidentally, does anyone know how I
- can make our SunOS 4.1.1 clients start looking to Allegro as their NIS
- server (I know about NIS-compatibility mode but have had no luck yet)?
