  28. Is your tape drive connected to a Mac or to an SGI?  In a mixed
  29. MAC/SGI setting, one way to do it is to put the tape drive on
  30. a MAC and use Retrospect/Retrospect Remote backup software, an
  31. *excellent* product.  Then use NFS/Share on the MAC that has the
  32. tape drive to mount the SGI's hard drive on the MAC's desktop.
  33. Retrospect can back up from anything mounted on a MAC desktop.

  35. If the tape is on the SGI then you'll have to use UNIX backup
  36. software of some kind, and use CAP (Columbia Appletalk Package)
  37. to let the SGI speak AppleTalk.  I prefer having the tape drive
  38. on a MAC because Retrospect beats any UNIX program I've seen
  39. for user interface and flexibility.

  41. Of course, in case of a real major crash, you should have a
  42. backup of the root partition from your SGI that can be restored
  43. locally--you cannot talk to the MACs until you get the system
  44. and the network software running.
