- I have an IRIS 4D/240 (twin tower) recently upgraded from
- 4.0.4 to 4.0.5(a) that now exhibits (randomly) the following strange
- behavior on the graphics tube.
- The login screen ( with visual logins enabled).
- -border surrounding icons oversized
- -user names under icons too large
- -login/password prompt strings over sized
- -text in login username/password windows oversized
- -system_id name in lower left had corner oversized
- any combination or permuation of the above from no distortion
- to usually no more that 2 of the above at one time.
-
-
- Logged in
- -Workspace - 0/1/2/3 folder or other icons oversized.
- -EMACS- ocassionaly a window comes up oversized with
- oversized characters. Quit and restart, and
- it comes up proper sized.
- -calendar - sometimes the month days are oversized while
- the date numbers are microscopic.
- -Subscreens under system manager tool, sometimes icons are
- over sized and letters on buttons microscopic.
-
- I can go on but you can see the pattern. This whole thing seems to have
- started about the time I upgraded from 4.0.4 to 4.0.5. There are 3 other
- systems also that have been upgraded from 4.0.4. to 4.0.5 (280,PI,240)
- and show no signs of this problem.
-
- In a fit of desperation, I brought up miniroot and removed
- all vestiges of IRIX and any layered products and went to the miniroot
- shell to find and remove any system files that might be left over (includeing
- the installation history files but not the files read by chkconfig).
- Then I installed everything from scratch from IRIX through layered products
- to maint tapes. Before leaving miniroot, I restored such files as
- passwd,hosts,groups,sys_id. Then I booted up the new system,
- the problem showed up again. The only positive note is that I seem to have
- freed up a surprizeing amount of disk space (unused stuff that has
- accumulated since 3.3.1).
- What could cause random Icon oversize or text over/under size???
- Any sugestions as to what else to try????
