  11.     I have an IRIS 4D/240 (twin tower) recently upgraded from
  12. 4.0.4 to 4.0.5(a) that now exhibits (randomly) the following strange 
  13. behavior on the graphics tube.
  14.     The login screen ( with visual logins enabled).
  15.         -border surrounding icons oversized
  16.         -user names under icons too large
  17.         -login/password prompt strings over sized
  18.         -text in login username/password windows oversized
  19.         -system_id name in lower left had corner oversized
  20.       any combination or permuation of the above from no distortion
  21.       to usually no more that 2 of the above at one time.

  24.     Logged in
  25.         -Workspace - 0/1/2/3 folder or other icons oversized.
  26.         -EMACS-  ocassionaly a window comes up oversized with
  27.             oversized characters. Quit and restart, and
  28.             it comes up proper sized.
  29.         -calendar - sometimes the month days are oversized while
  30.             the date numbers are microscopic.
  31.         -Subscreens under system manager tool, sometimes icons are
  32.             over sized and letters on buttons microscopic.

  34. I can go on but you can see the pattern. This whole thing seems to have 
  35. started about the time I upgraded from 4.0.4 to 4.0.5. There are 3 other 
  36. systems also that have been upgraded from 4.0.4. to 4.0.5 (280,PI,240) 
  37. and show no signs of this problem.

  39.     In a fit of desperation, I brought up miniroot and removed
  40. all vestiges of IRIX and any layered products and went to the miniroot
  41. shell to find and remove any system files that might be left over (includeing
  42. the installation history files but not the files read by chkconfig). 
  43. Then I installed everything from scratch from IRIX through layered products 
  44. to maint tapes. Before leaving miniroot, I restored such files as
  45. passwd,hosts,groups,sys_id. Then I booted up the new system, 
  46. the problem showed up again. The only positive note is that I seem to have
  47. freed up a surprizeing amount of disk space (unused stuff that has 
  48. accumulated since 3.3.1).
  49.     What could cause random Icon oversize or text over/under size???
  50. Any sugestions as to what else to try????
