- Having spent a lot of time as a user and as support for both Irix SLIP
- and MorningStar PPP on the IRIS, I think I can comment on this.
-
- The differences between the two protocols as I understand it fall into
- two main areas: SLIP supports IP only, PPP supports more protocols
- (depending on vendor); PPP can negotiate options (like IP address, VJ
- header compression, etc), whereas SLIP must have all the options
- negotiated out-of-band. PPP also supports more authentication options
- than (Irix) SLIP, though at the moment each vendor's version seems to
- be incompatible.
-
- Performance differences between them are swamped by differences in
- modem performance, even between V.32bis brands.
-
- As far as "interface", the most obvious difference between Irix SLIP
- and MorningStar PPP is how the link is managed. Irix SLIP must be
- manually started and shut down, Mst PPP will dynamically dial when
- packets arrive, and drop the phone connection after a timeout period.
- Since I first used SLIP on Irix, I only recently discovered that other
- versions of SLIP don't even support chat scripts -- you'd have to dial
- the connection manually, then manually start the slip processes on
- both ends (how primitive!). Irix SLIP has the same dialer/chat script
- functionality as uucico. MorningStar uses a different though
- functionally equivalent dialer capability.
-
- As for price, Irix SLIP is frre with the OS (on releases 4.0 and
- later), MorningStar PPP is $795 a copy last time I knew.
