- As I mentioned in a post last week, my Atari Portfolio has gone
- belly-up. One of the folks who responded to my call for help
- suggested that, if I decide to replace the Pofo, I should look at the
- Zeos Pocket PC. Although I was initially reluctant to do so because
- of the relatively large size, I've been reconsidering that on the
- basis of the increased ease of typing. I've looked at the archives on
- csd4.csd.uwm.edu, and that has answered a lot of questions, but I
- still have a few.
-
- 1) Based on the photo I saw in an old PC Magazine, it appears that the
- keys are laid out on about 0.7-inch centers, only a bit smaller than
- the standard 0.75-inch. Did I measure and extrapolate correctly? How
- does this compare to the spacing of other similar models like the
- Poqet, Sharp, and Abstract?
-
- 2) What kind of keyswitches are used? I saw someone refer to them as
- "Chiclet," while someone else mentioned "positive action;" these
- descriptions sound contradictory to me. Is there a mechanical key
- click? If there is a non-mechanical key sound, can it be turned off?
-
- 3) Could somebody describe the non-MS-Works ROM software?
-
- 4) I've also seen mention of the Abstract machine, and it sounds
- mostly comparable with the Zeos -- in some ways better (battery life
- and convenience, recharging NiCds directly; processor speed; external
- keyboard port) and in some ways worse (only one PCMCIA slot), at about
- the same price. I've only seen specs, though, no user experience. I
- sent email to Abstract but haven't heard back -- does this machine
- exist? Does anyone have any experience with it? How does it really
- compare with the Zeos?
-
- Thanks for any replies.
