- How do you differentiate between PDAs and pen computers, exactly? I always
- thought PDA was an Apple marketing term. The only obvious difference I've
- noticed between, say, a Newton and an EO440 is that the models of the former
- are smaller than the (working hardware) of the latter, and that the `Newton'
- has a simulation of a display etched onto what looks like a sheet of
- perspex whereas the 440 has an eight-grey-level 640 X 480 LCD.
-
- The distinction that I would make between a PDA and a "pen computer"
- is that a PDA is a vertical market product designed to support the
- function of what in the software market are called PIMs (Personal
- Information Managers -- access tools for Addresses, Appointments,
- etc...). Apple's description of "a Sharp Wizard on Steroids" is
- pretty close. In contrast a "pen computer" is a general purpose
- computing device with a pen as input (Perhaps "Portable Workstation"?)
-
- How are these different? I see two ways -- The obvious difference is
- price: $2000+ is a lot more than "under $1000" [Apple -- MacWeek
- v7n3]. The other is level of expectation. It doesn't upset anyone
- that a Wizard is incapable of controlling laboratory instruments. But
- a "portable workstation" should do everything a desktop should do --
- AND it should be light, let me work with it while carrying it down the
- hall, etc...
