I run T/R networks with about 100 Macs, from SE/30s up to Quadras, using DCA's MacIRMAtrak T/R board. I have had no major problems to speak of, and DCA has been very good about upgrading their drivers to work with variuos appletalk releases, ARA, etc. I have had more problems with NW-Mac, but 3.011 seems to have fixed many of those.
As far as adding an ethernet branch to your network, you might consider one for adding communications/printing services, which are much more plentiful/cheaper than their T/R equivalents.
